'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' is a soulless action flick.

When in 2014, the first Godzilla movie opened to 90 Million, Universal had reasons to celebrate, as well as massive plans of an extended monster universe. Sadly, the second week in its theatrical window, Godzilla had one of the biggest drops in a Hollywood history, eventually, the movie still managed to gross 200M domestically. Next movie from the universe that was released was a respectably successful Kong: Skull Island, and now Godzilla: King of the Monsters, next in plans, scheduled for 2020 is a battle between Kong and Godzilla. Unfortunately, instead of being epic as it was intending to be, the sequel to Godzilla joins the rank of countless of pointless and unnecessary sequels that Hollywood produces each year.

In this part, the crypto-zoological agency faces off against the giant-sized monsters, including the King of the monsters himself, Godzilla.

Godzilla: Kind of the Monsters has a totally different pace to the first movie. After the release of 2014's Godzilla, people, critics, and the press criticized its slow and monotonic pace, saying that the film was boring, so now in a sequel, there is 50 times more action, characters, monsters, fights, and explosions. Producers clearly expected that changing the pace was the right direction for the series, but the reception will be highly dependable on the eye of a beholder. Sequel to Godzilla feels like a 2-hour run of a mindless action that despite all the bangs simply fails to deliver and hold the interest.

Respectable cast, including well-known names such as Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Milly Bobby Brown, Ziyi Zhang, and Sally Hawkins is mostly underused. Chandler and Farmiga have the most to do, having a very small, but at least some sort of character arc. Sally Hawkins, despite reprising her role from the first film is barely noticeable, and even her big death scene feels very uneventful. The debatable quality of writing and the treatment of said characters makes it hard to believe that so many big names signed on this project.

Film's plot is ridiculously predictable and full of ludicrous clichés. The point of the actions made by the characters seems as if it was already made thousands of time before and writers were just rehashing for fun. The big turning point, as well as the choices, made nearly the end of the movie feel too reductive and too simple. The writing is just lousy, lazy and clearly rushed.

Many things can be argued about, but one thing Godzilla: King of the Monsters can not be called is boring. Its constant scenes of action make it hard to look away from the screen and the monsters look genuinely mesmerizing on the screen. The production design is easily the strongest element of the movie – every single detail of the set and beasts is perfected to the cote and beautiful.

Godzilla should do well enough among the audience that expects fast action and lots of big-screen explosions, but to the rest will feel empty and confused after leaving the cinema. The huge potential of Godzilla series that the American remake has is simply misguided and misused. The first film felt too pretentious, while the second movie feels too hollow. Hopefully, Kong will help to balance Godzilla in the upcoming movie.
